New tug for Western Towboat launched

Last week Western Towboat launched their newest tug Bering Titan.

She is the 7th of the Titan tug series they have built in their own Ballard shipyard, designed by Bob Shrewsbury Jr. who is one of the Owners and President of the company. To launch the boat she is placed on hydraulic dollies and rolled from the building pad onto a floating dry dock than launched in the Lake Washington Ship Canal in front of Western Towboat office.

The Bering Titan is 120′ in length 35′ beam and 20′ depth. She has 2 C-175 Caterpillar main engines totaling 6,200hp, and 2 John Deere generators for power and hydraulics. Propulsion for this boat is 2 Schottel SRP1515 azimuthing units 104″ 4 blade propellers. This boat has a new double drum tow winch design we came up with working with rapp hydma.

When final outfitting is done she will be towing 420’x105 rail barges from Seattle, WA to Whittier, Alaska for the Alaska Railroad and Alaska Marine Lines.
