A FUEL leak from a drybulk carrier that ran aground in Norway on 31 July is under control, its owner said today. The 26,800dwt Full City is under salvage control, with most of its 1,200 tonnes of bunker fuel still on board, sowner Roc Maritime of Panama added. The ship, which was carried no cargo, ran aground at Langesund off the southern coast of Norway in heavy weather. [SinglePic not found]Response efforts have focused on the containment and recovery of oil traces, which escaped from bunker tanks into the sea. Roc added that the pollution specialist ITOPF is still on hand to provide assistance. Salvage contractor Smit International is preparing to remove its bunker fuel to obviate further spillage risk. Clean-up of the shore has already started, and further assessments of contamination are being carried out. Full City is a 26,800dwt, geared bulker built in 1995 in Hakodate, Japan. It is registered in Panama and classed by NKK.

Also in Scandinavia, Swedish coastguards located and identified the wreck of the 2,550dwt Langeland, but found no trace of its crew. The general cargo ship had been loaded with rocks and was heading for Norway when it disappeared in the same storm on 31 July in the Skagerrak.
