Svitzer is strengthening its fleet in Avonmouth (Upper Bristol Channel) with the Svitzer Avon, a new-build 70 tbp ASD escort tug, arriving mid-September 2017.

Svitzer has acquired a Sanmar new-build 70 tbp ASD tug for Avonmouth (Upper Bristol Channel), strengthening its fleet to meet current and future customer requirements and re-emphasising its commitment to the port of Bristol.

The new Sanmar built Robert Allan design vessel – a RAstar 2800-E Class ASD Harbour/Terminal tug – has been specifically chosen for its manoeuvrability and reliability. The vessel is FIFI 1 compliant and powered by two MTU main engines producing 2000 kW.

The tug will be named Svitzer Avon, a name with connotations of local geography. It will join the fleet in Bristol in mid-September.

Svitzer currently operates a fleet of three tugs in the Bristol port with bollard pull ranging from 40 to 50 tbp. The new 70 tbp tug will add extra flexibility and versatility to Svitzer’s operation. The Svitzer Avon will replace Svitzer Portgarth.

Managing Director for Svitzer South West UK and interim CCO, Svitzer SW UK, Tim Allen, says:

“Svitzer has always been committed to the port of Bristol and the new tug is a prime example of such commitment. It is a main priority for us to always make sure we keep optimising the fleet to best meet the local needs.”
