The Nautical Institute, Hong Kong Branch and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association will jointly host a major one-day conference on piracy on Friday, 13th November 2009.

With ships and crews still being held captive off Somalia, and the number of pirate attacks around the world still not decreasing, the threat of piracy continues to affect seafarers and shipowners as they pursue their lawful business in international waters around the globe.

The Nautical Institute, Hong Kong Branch and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association are bringing together seafarers, owners and organisations which are in the front line of the fight against piracy, as well as those who work behing the scenes to negotiate for the safe release of captives and counsel those who have suffered the trauma of captivity.

The conference will consider the current situation and discuss best practice to assist owners, managers and crews combat the threat. In addition, a discussion forum will attempt to define a framework for creating an agreed international response to future incidents around the globe.

An excellent line-up of speakers from the Hong Kong government, various navies, UKMTO, EUNAVFOR and Interpol will join security experts, seafarers’ charities, insurers and legal experts to present a wide-ranging array of papers. Selected speakers will also join a panel discussion before the conference closes.

The event is not-for-profit so costs have been kept to a minimum. The full day conference, including tea and coffee, lunch and a cocktail reception costs only HK$ 680 per delegate and registration starts at 0800 hours at the Mariners’ Club in Middle Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Booking forms are available at www.nautinsthk.com and further details may be obtained from Capt. Robert Herman on +852 96832745.
