Freighter moving downriver

by Hans | March 23rd, 2010

The freighter Alpena is no longer stuck on ice off Lighthouse Beach in Port Huron, and is now traveling down the St. Clair River.  The sight of the freighter drew several people to the beach throughout the morning.

Gary Munroe, 70, an instructor on the sea cadet training vessel Grayfox, watched from shore. He said it appeared that ice was forcing Alpena toward shore, outside the shipping channel.

The tug Manitou from Malcolm Marine in St. Clair assisted in breaking ice around Alpena, which began making progress again at about 10:30 a.m. Black smoke billowed from Alpena’s smokestack and ice could be seen kicking up from behind the freighter as its props spun. Soon, the tug Salvor from McKeil Marine in Hamilton, Ontario also assisted.
