“Stormy weather”

by Hans | July 5th, 2010

Dear Sir/Madam,

Because of the financial crisis our work for seafarers got in stormy weather in 2010. A storm in the maritime industry is not unknown. We should always be aware of it. We must be accurate to respond on time, by:

– ship and crew must be able to withstand rough handling and be well prepared.

– having faith, confidence and courage to go to work, but avoiding bravura.

Using these criteria we perform our beautiful work with dedication for more than a century. Our port chaplains, diaconal workers and volunteers in the Dutch ports are in many ways subservient for the seafarers of all nations and off all believes, by:

– providing on board an emphatic ear to them who are concerned about their relatives, being afraid of piracy, etc.

– assist and help them to solve their problems.

– visiting and supporting them in hospitals.

– supporting seamen’s centres: providing communication facilities, entertainment, sport and a pastoral ear.

– SEA TV dvd’s and the quarterly ‘Diepgang’, which deals with religion, maritime industry and society.

– weekly ecumenical church services in the English language

– representing the interest of seafarers in governmental and labour issues for the benefit of the seafarer’s welfare.

Our funds have been drained over the past years and become insufficient to continue the work on the same high level. For this reason the NZC campaigns to the government, companies and churches to maintain the employment of the workers and their work. Our workers are desperately needed now for i.e. dismissed seafarers, unemployed ships in the ports, hospital care, etc. In this stormy weather hands on deck is an absolute requirement. We must be present for the seafarers both now and certainly in the future as well. We have to respond to the evolving work on board.

The campaign has seen its start; we feel fortunate that we are not alone. Therefore we request you as highly respected (coming to be) contributor to continue contributing. The fee remains € 20,00, which includes the quarterly ‘Diepgang’. But we have taken the liberty not to fill out that fee on the payment check. Every year it turns out that many people show their appreciation by filling out a higher amount. The NZC appreciates your support highly. Support, which we desperately need.

Especially now!!!

The NZC greatly thanks you in advance for your contribution.
