Fairplay 22 Capsized

This afternoon the German registered tug Fairplay 22 (Imo 9148764) capsized at Hoek van Holland. Two crew member are missing. The accident happened this afternoon around 16.00 hrs near the Berghaven. Three of the five crewmembers are rescued.

The capsizing of the tug happened due to very bad weather according a spokesman of the Security region Rotterdam/Rijnmond.  The tug was assisted the ferry Stena Britannica. Humanitarian agencies are massively torn to port. The Coast Guard Centre in IJmuiden, the survival of Hoek van Holland and Ter Heijde were deployed in the salvage operation. Also a plane and a helicopter were sent to the location. Aid workers try to knock signals on the hull of a ship. Another tug, will tow the capsized Fairplay 22 to the port of Hoek van Holland. A sheerleg will try to turn the tug.

The tug’s keel was laid on December 12, 1996 on the “Construcciones Navales Santodomingo SA” yard at Vigo, Spain under yard number 613. The tug was launched on April 26, 1997 and handed over in April 1998 to her owners to “Fairplay Schleppdampfschiffsreederei Richard Borchard”, and managed by “Fairplay Towage BV” at Rotterdam. In 2004  she was chartered to BBB Schlepp- und Hafendienst GmbH at Rostock and managed by Fairplay Borchard at Hamburg. On the 1st march 2005 brought into “Euro Tugs” a pool formed by URS, Antwerp and Fairplay. In September 2008 she was transferred to Antwerp Towage NV, a joint venture of Multraship – Terneuzen and Fairplay – Hamburg, at Antwerp. The tug has a grt of 496 Grt, 148 Nrt. Her length is 34.75 mtrs, beam 10.80 mtrs and a draft of 4.60 mtrs. The Azimuth Stern Drive tug has 2 Deutz diesel engine type SBV8M628 with a total output of 3292 kW which develops a 55 ton bollard pull and a speed of 12 knots.

    How is it possible something like this happens, for a tug which is regularly at sea?
